Welcome to the community and thank you for sharing. yes you are not alone and lot of folks have been recently wanting to update and improve some bazel rules that have been contributed - https://github.com/flyteorg/bazelrules_flyte

Yeah I took some inspiration from that repo but it was a bit hard to get up and going with it so I ended up just building something myself. I'm about 95% of the way there for the simple case -- but the last 5% are stumping me. Currently reading through existing conversations to see if anything can help me in there before posting a question.
